These mugs are handmade and painted in Multan, known to Pakistanis as the city of saints and shrines. It has many mosques decorated with blue and white tiles and remains the centre of ceramics production in Pakistan. The artisans are known as Kashigar, which comes from a Persian word meaning ‘the art of painting on ceramics’. Kashan was a production centre for Persian ceramics in the Middle Ages and artisans moved from there to the Indian subcontinent during the 12th century, settling in Multan, the Pakistani city of Hala, as well as the states of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh in modern-day India.
